Otherwise known as the "Unborn Victims of Violence" law, it went into effect here in North Carolina last December. This statute is being used for the first time in the case of Danielle Marie Watson, who was killed by a co-worker on January 14th, 2012.
I'm not going to get into the whole abortion debate here*, but I find it interesting that a fetus is human if someone else kills the mother (or just the fetus if the mother lives), but not if the "mother" decides to get rid of it.
(For the record, I think that in a world where abortion is the law of the land it's unconscionable to have compulsory child support. Think about it.)
*I can talk about it, but there will be no discussion. My blog, my rules.
I like your rules..... :)
ReplyDeleteI find that it saves a lot of pain.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by Matt!
Hmm..trying to remember if NC has the death penalty. My mind is blanking and I'm feeling entirely too lazy to go look it up. That being said...just released from prison 2 months ago and already wanted for robbery and murder? They need to bitch* this guy. If the judge in this case doesn't, he's failing miserably in his duty as a judge.
ReplyDelete* habitual offender, life with no possibility of parole...ever.
Yes, we do have the death penalty for first degree murder, and I believe the prosecutor will seek it given the heinous nature of the crime.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by CW!
I was adopted so where I stand on the whole abortion thing is pretty personal. I agree though, you can't call it murder if someone else does it, and a choice if you choose to have someone else do it.
ReplyDeleteI can see where it would be personal for you, for more reasons than one.
ReplyDeleteFor the record I'm agin' it, but not for the reasons one might expect.
Thanks for dropping by Brigid!
