I too was unimpressed by this rat thing (although I can certainly understand an archaeologist being excited at finding it well preserved as it is) but I lacked the means to properly know or express why; this Velociworld character just gave me more than I'll ever need :)

...that's because it IS a tree rat. And probably only about 45 or 50 years old, stuck in a tar pit.
I don't trust their carbon dating, since it is based on circular reasoning:
"The fossil is 3 million years old."
"How do you know?"
"The rock it was in is three million years old."
"How do you know?"
"The carbon dating of the fossil tells us the age of the rock..."

How old it is really doesn't matter, the point is that it was being advertised as something that it isn't. Much ado about nothing, basically.
