Heat Wave

The temperature is up high enough today (55 Fahrenheit) to have completely melted the snow off the car. The snow is also gone from the bushes and they are starting to stand back up, a good sign that they will recover from the snowpocalypse. There is still a nice unbroken expanse of snow through the front yard which is shaded by the pine trees out front and along the back in the shadow of the house, but everywhere else it is gone except for fringes.

Dog and I were able to walk all around the house for the first time in a long time.The back yard is pretty wet, but except for some low-lying spots and the aforementioned expanse in the shadow of the trees the ground in the front of the house has dried up pretty well. Tomorrow is supposed to be quite a bit cooler (39) with rain but Wednesday the forecast is for 70 degrees or better, depending on who you listen to. Of course it will be raining.

Thursday is calling for more snow and freezing rain.

I love living in the South.

It could be worse, though. Tam has been Scooby-less due to clutch issues that have thankfully been resolved and she's had to pilot the Nazi roller skate around in way worse weather than I've had to endure for quite some time now. In my world the Baja has soldiered on without a hiccup and the Mustang hasn't moved in over two weeks (although I did fire it up the other day to dry it out and hear it run). I'm going to take it out a bit today though while the temperature allows and the sun shines.

Eight inches in Raleigh on Wednesday night into Thursday morning. This is the most snow we've had in a short period of time in a very very long time.

After finally digging out from under the Icepocalypse...Snowpalooza 15!!!

I'm wondering just when I moved from North Carolina back to Iowa. It's been a rough February this year, although it's been a pretty good one for me.

The bad thing is there was no snow in the forecast for Raleigh today, but the good thing is, time and a half tonight because it is officially a weather event.

And...Teacher is home from school today because of the weather...maybe I can go over there and let her make me late for work.

I think I'm going to go do the things I need to so that I can do the things I want to.

Fast n' Furious 15: Snow Drift

Last night winter descended on the Piedmont with a vengeance, coating any surface it could reach with a layer of snow followed by a misting of ice.

The Baja didn't want to start this morning to go home, it had to be kicked over three times before it finally conceded to stay running. Once it had agreed to the task, however, it handled the snowy roads with a Subaru sure-footedness typical of the breed.

This is the kind of weather I would expect in a late Iowa December, not a mid February North Carolina...or any other time in North Carolina either for that matter.

If I should ever meet Al Gore I'm going to junk-punch him until his eyes bleed. That Mann jackass is going down as well, and should that Hansen asshole from NASA open his festering suckhole in my presence I may just become homicidal.

On a more pleasant note, though, since Teacher didn't have to go to school today she stayed up most the night trading texts with me. Somewhere around 4:30 I stopped getting answers, so I'm guessing that's about the time she hit the wall.



Things seem to be working out pretty well in this regard.

There It Is

This morning when I left RTP it was a little damp and the clouds were starting to clear away.

As I got closer to home I started to see snow on the ground.

 Yes, I pulled over to take these.

Doggeh didn't quite know what to think of it.

By the time I got up this afternoon it was all gone.

Southern Weather

Yesterday the temps were in the mid 60's and the sun was shining, so I took the car down and washed it. It needed the wash job pretty badly, I'm not as good about washing it as I should be (because every time I wash it I seem to find another ding in the paint).

Astute observers might recall that a mere seven days ago we were experiencing freezing rain. Oh what difference a week makes.

You have to take these days where you can, the freezing rain should be back Monday morning.

 UPDATE: Now it's just rain for Monday, but we're supposed to have wintery mix a week from Saturday. When these guys can predict the weather accurately a week in advance I might be a little more convinced about Glow-Bull Warmening. Until then...yeah, not so much.

Winter Weather Advisory

Freezing rain today in the Triangle. I got to drive home in it.

Note to my fellow North Carolinians: 4WD is not magic and it will not automatically enable you to continue to drive like an idiot on the ice. Also, slow down and stop following me so close, I'm not going to speed up. Not today. Watch out for that tree there bub...like the way you did the complete 180 and hit it tailgate first, though. That should buff right out. Sure, no problem, I'll wait for the state trooper, I obviously have nothing better to do.

Fortunately I have nowhere to be today, and all day to get there.

The snow is falling in the Piedmont.

Not much of it, and it isn't expected to stay around, but it is falling. We're getting a light accumulation on some of the colder surfaces. It's expected to turn into rain by noon and then go away completely.

But still...snow for Christmastime. That's nice.

Especially since it won't stick around.

What A Difference A Day Makes

Yesterday, cold and rainy with highs in the middle 30s.

Today, warm and sunny with highs in the low 70's.

Yep, gotta love the weather in Dixie. Too bad I have to waste it on work.

Ice Ice Baby

Freezing rain today, it started at noon yesterday and is forecast to continue on through the day with temperatures only climbing to the high 30's. I get to drive to work in it, oh joy.

The power just went out about fifteen minutes ago, no doubt due to ice on the lines. I have a lantern for light and the phone has internet and communication, not to mention Kindle to keep me amused.

Shame it can't do laundry.

PS. I am thoroughly sick of winter now.

UPDATE: I decided round about six thirty that I wanted some coffee. However, with the power out the stove doesn't work. No problems, I have a camp stove and a camp stove coffeepot! So I go out to the shed and pull it out of the loft...and then realize without electricity the water pump doesn't work, either...

So off I go to get some water, and perhaps some other needful things, and Krispy Kreme has coffee and donuts...and when I got back the power was back on and so the collapse of civilization as we know it has been put on temporary hiatus.

Oh well, I needed some emergency water stores anyway, and the ice is very pretty when it's not knocking out your power.

Snowpalooza 2014

The snow is falling in Raleigh for the third time this year.

Al Gore needs to be kicked in the crotch until his eyes bleed.

UPDATE: The snow has turned into freezing rain. Daughter came home early from work, Son In Law took the Scoobytruck to get her so we just went to get her car. The snow is about 3" deep and has not yet gotten a great deal of ice accumulation. Hopefully it stays that way. The roads were snow covered but not horribly slick. All in all, it's a good day to stay inside.

Live-Blogging the Snowpocalypse

Between 2 and 3 inches fell on us at the Refuge. I got out early the next morning, cleared the snow from the Subaru and Daughter's car and shoveled the walks and driveway. The sun came out and dried the driveway out before the afternoon was half over.

Son-In-Law borrowed the Subaru (AWD) to drive Daughter to work (Daughter can't drive a stick) and reported the roads were mostly clear. I went out to gas the Subi up and get a few things and the roads were clear and dry.

Today I went out and cleared off the Mustang, tomorrow I'll take it out and wash it up. There's a car show on Saturday and I want her to look good. The temps should be in the low 50's tomorrow and the high 50's on Saturday.

So to recap...Monday I drove the car to work with the top down, Tuesday it snowed on us, Wednesday I cleared the driveway and daily drivers, today the other two got cleared off, tomorrow will be warm enough to wash and detail the car and Saturday should be top down weather again for the car show if the sun is shining.

That's wintertime in the South.

A note about the picture; this was taken from my driveway, the road I live on is not maintained so the snow removal was done by Mr. Sun. It was clear by Wednesday night, having only been driven on all day and not plowed a bit.

Snowmageddon has begun...

The End Is Near

The Snowpocalypse has passed, but Snowmageddon is upon us!

As much as 3-5 inches of snow is possible in the greater Raleigh area starting Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Fortunately I don't have to work Tuesday night, so no need for me to be out in it.

It's shaping up to be a good night to sit by the fire with a beverage of choice.

Stupid Weather Channel

It started raining on me right before I got to Asheville and just past Knoxville I saw my first poo flinging monkey salt flinging truck. After that the glowbull warmening flurries hit on and off till I was just short of Nashville. After that the sun came out for a little bit and from there to Millington all was dry. Windy, but dry.

The Smokey Mountains demonstrating how they got their name. Just rain, not glowbull warmening. The pic was taken from the cell phone which was securely anchored and being used as a nav device, so you can stop picking at me now.

I probably could have gotten away with driving the Mustang, but I think it would have upset me a bit to have salt flung on it. As it was the Baja got salted down a bit, and with the temps not expected to get above the hard water mark the whole time I'm here it looks like I won't be washing it off soon, but it did rain and snow and then rain again after that so hopefully the worst of it got rinsed off.

Nothing looks familiar here in Millington in the dark. I might have to wander through the old burg a bit in the daylight to see if I recognize anything. But for now, since I'm checked in at the lodge, I'm going to go off and find a bite to eat and then settle in for the evening.

Travel continues tomorrow through St Louis and Kansas City MO, I hope to be home before bedtime.

All Right, Fine...

Subaru it is then.

I'm not happy about it though.
