Nice To Be Home Again

Eleven states and both families have been visited in the past ten days. Gifts and greetings have been exchanged and a good time was had by all.

We got back home today in the rain to find the roof still leaks in the kitchen and bathroom. As I type this missive I am listening to pieces falling off the kitchen ceiling.

I guess for the new year I'm going to break down and put a new roof on the Refuge...and one on the Mustang as well, for the same reason.

Be it ever so waterlogged, there's no place like home...

Idle Thoughts

Watching that new Subaru commercial, where the guy is going everywhere and painting shitty pictures, gives me an eye tic. Particularly when he tells his wife that the one picture is upside down. I'd just like to punch him to the floor and say "There, how does it look now?"

It makes me think that Subaru is fighting hard for the "pretentious douchebag who can't afford a BMW" demographic. Sad, really, cause I truly like my Baja.

Oh well, I needed front tires worse anyway, and besides, I know a guy...

Are We Really That Thin Skinned?

Some fellow by the name of 50 Cent, who I understand is a musician of some sort, had a commercial on the radio advertising SK Energy Shots.

At any rate, Mr. Cent (who apparently is a person of color) starts off his advertisement with a rather flat monotone about how being tired took away the bass notes in his voice and made him sound "like a white dude."

I kind of thought the advertisement in question was rather humorous, but apparently someone took offense. Today as I was listening to the same commercial the line had changed to "like some dorky dude."

I think it was much funnier the other way.

And with that, I'm off to bed.

Oops

If you are servicing a pressurized system, always disconnect the inlet side before you disconnect the outlet side. That way the pressure can bleed off and you won't get cooling oil all over you.

It also helps to shut the pump off before you disconnect anything.

Off to the shower now, and then to bed.

Ubuntu

For the price of some charred oinky ribs I had a friend of mine come over and install Ubuntu on my ailing magic elf box.

It didn't go as smoothly as one would hope.

Finally after about five hours of work it came up and connected and seemed to be acting fine, but wouldn't connect to the printer (online forums were less than helpful, their solution was to get a non-Lexmark printer) and wouldn't share files (yes, the proper software is installed).

Not fifteen minutes after he left the damn thing dropped off the network and won't reconnect.

I'm going with his suggestion to get a bigger hard-drive so that Windows XP and Ubuntu can both be installed. That way I can play with Ubuntu to my heart's content and still have access to my files and printer the rest of the time.

Good thing I still have the laptop!

There Goes Another One

Once more, just because you can doesn't necessarily follow that you should.

Even if the shoe is on the other foot this time.

Just A Thought

About the Gulf oil well gusher disaster in the making:

We sure dodged a bullet with that Alaskan snowbilly hick, didn't we?

Dammit

Tomorrow the wife and I have to go to Rocky Mount so that she can get a test done, then Wednesday we meet with the doc. I've been working on her car all weekend to get it ready for the trip; new struts to fix the bounce, new tires, and a new hose on the power steering.

The plan was that I would work half a night tonight, come home and get some Z's, and then we would head out bright and early in the morning. Alas, plans never survive first contact.

First contact came in the guise of a puff of smoke out of the tailpipe when I was about halfway to work. By the time I was three quarters of the way, the puff had turned into a vapor cloud and the temp gauge was climbing.

Third blown head gasket on this car since I have owned it. I hate this car. The only good thing I can say about it at this point is at least it didn't blow the head gasket halfway to Rocky Mount. I would like to treat it to a suitable application of high explosives, but the wife likes her little Pontiac so I will fix it. Again.

Anyway, work is canceled and I spent the night working on the faithful mighty Rampage instead. It needed an EGR valve, and I had bought some gauges that I wanted to put in it. It also needs some minor adjustments to the door latches on the drivers door and various other little projects. What can I say, it's my little beater car and it's been a good one.

I put the EGR valve in and the rest of the little projects (including the gauges) will have to wait. We will take the Rampage to Rocky Mount instead, it doesn't have AC but I guess we will have to suffer through it. Thankfully it's not horribly hot yet, and we will be traveling in the morning, so the lack of AC shouldn't be a big issue.

So the new plan is Wednesday when I get home I get to tear the engine apart on the Pontiac. I'll order the parts Wednesday and hopefully they will be in by Friday so I can put the motor back together before I have to go to work Saturday night.

Between the Pontiac, doctor's visits and work I haven't had much time lately.

UPDATE: The PET scan machine was broken so that didn't get done. It will be fixed Friday, so she will get that done and then another appointment with another doctor. I don't know if Fate is trying to keep me from getting the Pontiac fixed or just trying to give me a day of rest cooling my heels in the motel room. Either way, that's my life.

Dumbed Down

I thought I got a pretty good education.

Having read this, I feel like an utter imbecile.

It's Sad To See

Brigid has had to restrict comments at the Range because of a troll.

Having never met her, I only know her through her command of the written word. From that knowledge I see a gentle soul who has a core of solid steel.

I know that even the most likable among us (not a good description of me, by the way) has some that do not like them. I am saddened by the fact that someone has seen the need to take a potshot at such a beautiful spirit as she.

The Range is usually my last stop of the day while skimming the interwebs. I find that I usually need a bit of tranquility after everything else that I see.

Chin up lass. Only you can define who you are. But then, you knew that already.

So True

Filed under the heading of "It sucks getting old" we find this entry.

Number three is too painfully true to be as funny as it should be.

Thanks for the reminder Bill. As if I really needed one.

Raaaaacists!!!!!

Since we're all H8RZ now, we might as well be.

Many places have posted something about it, so far this one is my favorite.

And if you haven't bought the book, what are you waiting for?

(By the way, I have it on very good authority that if someone ponies up a huge bag o' cash, there will be a film version of Monster Hunter's International. Are you listening Bill Whittle?)

Remember, there are five a's in raaaaacism!
