Oh, Deer

Apparently the secret to bagging Bambi is to leave half your gear at home and drive the car you don't want to get blood and guts in.

It was only a spike yearling buck, maybe a hundred pounds on the hoof, but he's in the cooler now.

Hunting Partner (different guy than Range Partner) got one as well, the first ever for his Weatherby, using his reloaded ammo.

All in all, a pretty good day in the woods. (For us, not so much for Bambi.)

The thing is that "in the cooler" stuff. Well done!

Congrats! Details? Which implement of death and destruction was used for the dispatch? Distance? Inquiring minds, no, make that nosy people want to know.

Thanks Keads. It was my very first one ever, so I was pretty amped about it even though it isn't very big.

I used the Franchi (12 gauge autoloader), double aught, about 25 yards. Nice broadside shot, couldn't have asked for a better one. Would have used the Arisaka but when I tried to sight the scope it was way high and wouldn't adjust enough to come down, so I'll have to work on the mount a bit before next weekend.

Got it, thanks Robert!

Awesome! Something I've always wanted to do, but haven't had the chance.

Younger Brother is an avid hunter but I hadn't had the time for it until I retired from the USN and moved here. He gave me a hard time about the (lack of) size of my specimen, but he's used to those corn fed Iowa deer.

They look about like the deer we had in Texas. About the size of a large dog. My first was a forked horn buck that field dressed about 70 pound. The next day I shot a doe that was a lot bigger. Fun times. Sometimes I really miss Texas.

That's what Brother said, large dogs.
